Dear Passionate Mountain biking friends, this is the most spectacular mountain bike race anyone can ask for, it rips the word mountain biking apart as the mountains there make you feel dreadfully small, even if you should ride a 29’er, Jip three inches won’t make them any less forgiving towards your fit muscles!

This challenge is close to my heart as I think I lost my soul in the pristine beauty of the landscapes between Hazyview and Sabie, and now I frequently return there to search for it! Every excuse for a holiday I will find a way to be there with my bike.
Around Induna Adventures (At the start of The Induna race) you will find ample accommodation for you and your family or spectators, so rent a crowd as every breath of cheering will urge you on to the finish line! You will also have a few distance options to choose from based on your fitness, you will know when you lied about it…There is a 10km, 40-50, 70-75, 120km.

The route will surprise you every year, with either new single track, new quad trails that are tricky (and energy consuming), new bridges, or new CLIMBS. There is never a dreary moment (except for the drag towards the road next to the macadamia plantation, you’ll know when you get there) use it to get back into rhythm! Don’t stare at the beauty of Mother Nature there too long or she’ll send you a root to trip you. Having fun will come naturally to you in these forests, take advantage of this! You will feel the weight of the world leaving your shoulders as you plunge down the technical sections, noting else but survival will matter. Giggles will fill your stomach, ears will flame up and goose bumps will ride your back from your crown all the way down your spine at every nearly fall!

In winter time Induna has summer so prepare accordingly! Put sunscreen on even if it’s cloudy, get extra sachets of re-hydrate. And use the water points that are there for you! And after your battle with nature, sharp corners, unexpected rocks, slippery single tracks, and a hippo or two if you’re lucky please go down to the Sabie River and swim in the crystal waters where the Mac-Mac and Shabaan rivers meet up, you’ll be so refreshed you will be able to do it all over again!

The Induna national Marathon in my opinion is situated in one of the most beautiful areas in South Africa. After racing all over the world i can truely say that it is in my yearly must do list for bike racing. the organises go out there way to take in the most breathtaking singletracks combined with some of the best scenery South Africa has to offer. conditions are normally wonderful in hazyview and with so many other atrrictions around the area for your family you would be crazy to miss the weekend of fun in the lowveld. The course has some magical areas that are very remote, beautiful and often unnaccesible for the normal person. The event is smoothly run and the crew of induna go out there way to accomadate all that compete from the international proffesionals to the little kids that ride. I can promise you, you will finish off your day with a wonderful smile and the dream of returning again to test yourself in the lovely lowveld.

The Induna is the first MTB race that I did. I did not train at all for it… My friends asked me to come along since they were doing it and keen for a party as always, I tagged along. When I got to the number collection the night before the race I thought by myself, how far could 78km be. If old people can do it, I could easily do it even though I did not train at all. At that stage I did not have a proper mountain bike, so I used my bicycle I cycle to campus (TUKS) with every day. It has a steel frame that is so heavy I am sure is solid and a fork that is as good as rigid. When race day came the excitement was high and not long after a gunshot set off the race the pain began. It was the longest and most painful five-and-a-half hours of my life. Since then I have bought myself a proper MTB and been riding ever since. Thank you Induna for introducing me to the sport! I love it!

Reading Power Programme - progress report

Reporting Month: March & April 2011
Report by: Minky Makhubedu-Mashego

I find it a blessing to be helping the children with the READING POWER PROGRAMME. We are continuing to help them to read, write and understand English and our children are still very interested in the programme. We know that in due time our children will reap for life, and therefore we will not give up, we will press on.

New Home
It had not been easy to work in a garage at Amukelane Care Centre, where food was being prepared on a daily basis, as it was very hot and not a suitable place for learning. We were hoping for a miracle. Today we witnessed that miracle with the supprt of a group of 26 high school students accompanied by their 3 teachers who came all the way from Pinetree Secondary School in Vancouver, Canada, and were a real blessing to us. Within a period of two weeks they had renovated a building at Moduping Primary School for our usage. Now SizaBantwana is privileged to have a dedicated Reading Power Centre. They also provided us with plenty of books to start a library as well as clothes and toys for the children. We also appreciate the partnership between SizaBantwana and the principal of Moduping Primary School with the school governing body(SGB).

Challenges
We gave the children time to rest during the school holidays and it was also an opportunity for Precious, (Precious is an assistant facilitator in the reading programme) and I, to take a break. The reading power programme is very challenging as our children are not ecposed to hearing, reading and speaking English. It is our plan to eradicate this kind of disadvantages. As an example, I was helping a grade 8 girl with reading and understanding a story about a "daddy". I asked her if she knew the meaning of "daddy" in her own language and she told me that "daddy" meant "baboon". I just realized that there is a lot of basic and elementary work to be done. We encourage them to utter simple words and to read easy English story books. We also encourage children who are a bit more advanced in reading to use a dictionary for words that they do not understand.

Thank you Skukuza Primary
We are extremely grateful for the donation of books from Skukuza Primary School; about 295 books altogether.

We are facilitating the Reading Power Programme for all the children from our Amukelane project at Moduping Primary School. I am glad that our other children from the neighbouring school are comfortable to join us and to attend to their reading lessons at this school.

Keep on praying with us that this programme will be of transformation in the lives of our children. We rally appreciate all of your support. Your coming to visit us when you have time is, and will continue to be, of encouragement too.

Children's Ministry Prayer Workshop Report

Date: 6 May 2011
Venue: Petra College for children's ministry
By: Minky Makhubedu-Mashego

Four of Sizabantwana care workers attended a prayer workshop at Petra on Friday the 6 May 2011. The workshop was about teaching, training, motivating and encouraging born again children to pray for different aspects such as peace in their own families, for the salvation of friends and parents, for problems in their communities and in our country etc.

Attendants from Sizabantwana was:
- Elizabeth Mgiba
- Yvonne Mashaba
- Busisiwe Nyundu &
- Minky Makhubedu-Mashego

Speaker of the day was:
- Pastor Peter Sekhonyane from Orange farm in Gauteng together with his team.

We have learned that:
- We should make prayer the foundation of our Christian living and teach our children to do so.
- We must teach our children to be specific in prayer.
- In prayer we must expect answers
- Persistence. (Pray withour ceasing).
- Positioning of one's body when praying such as kneeling, laying down, lifting up of hands.

We were also exposed to an outreach to one of the OVC (orphans and vulnerable children) centres in Masoyi (Step in Faith children's ministry). Pastor Peter and his team demonstrated to us how to lead a group of children in Prayer and intercession.

I experienced this as very positive and important aspect of Sizabantwana's children benefit (Ministry).

Induna MTB Training plan

Your BIG Induna conditioning plan:

A warm BIG Induna greeting from the conditioning team. With little less than 6 weeks to go to race day we have a good mind that you are most probably on one of 2, maybe 3, places pertaining your fitness.

You either by now have had the luxury to develop a good Aerobic fitness base for the Induna race (See QUALITY VOLUME BASE PHASE below for some pointers if you want to be on par next year), or you have not (like the majority of us) had the time to give it any thought yet. Or maybe you are somewhere in-between? Well we would like to suggest some pointers, in the form of either a SHORT TERM INTERVENTION PLAN or a FULL OUT ASSAULT (or a combination of the two if you are the in-betweener), to help make sure you will definitely have a GREAT ride coming race day.

When applying the SAID (Specific Adaptations for Imposed Demands) principle, your preparation for the BIG Induna will need to be uniquely different and specific for that optimal day in the saddle.

The reason for this is that our terrain is unlike the majority of MTB racing terrain you will have experienced thus far. If you have already raced the BIG Induna before, you will most probably, with a BIG smile, know precisely what I mean. This is mainly because it is an exhilarating technical, tight, twisty, mostly permitting low to medium speed terrain with many accelerations and punchy climbs. This makes it an out of the ordinary awesome ride and therefore your preparation will need to be specific.
